Choosing the right school for your child is a significant decision and can feel overwhelming, especially with the vast array of options available in Central London. However, with a bit of guidance and some key considerations, you can find the perfect fit for your child’s educational journey…

Start with Primary School Visits

Begin by visiting the schools on your list. Most primary schools offer open days, typically in the Autumn term, and some may also provide individual tours. Taking the time to visit allows you to ask important questions and get a feel for the school’s environment. Here are some questions to consider during your visit:

  • Student Happiness: Do the children look happy and engaged?
  • Outdoor Spaces: Are there sufficient outdoor areas, and how much time do children spend outside?
  • Staff Stability: Have the staff been at the school for long periods? What about the head teacher and senior management team?
  • Nutrition: What food is provided to the children?
  • Special Needs Support: What provisions are in place for Special Educational Needs?
  • Curriculum Activities: What activities are included in the timetable? How much of the week is dedicated to sports?
  • Class Size: How many children are there in each class?
  • Wrap-Around Care: What is their provision for working parents?

Narrowing Down Your Choices

Once you have a shortlist of around four schools, your child will typically be asked to attend an assessment in the autumn following their third birthday. For girls schools, these assessments often take place in January. Some schools are non-selective and will offer a place immediately.

Consider a Holistic Education

Look for a primary school that offers a broad range of opportunities and experiences, such as sports, drama, music, IT, and outdoor learning. These activities help in the overall development of your child, nurturing various skills and interests.

Explore State Primary School Options

Don’t overlook the state schools in your area. Church schools, in particular, often have higher standards due to additional funding from the diocese and local authority, enabling them to offer a wider range of activities and more support staff.

Seek Insights from Other Parents

Speaking to current parents can provide invaluable insights into the school from a parent’s perspective. If your child attends a nursery, they might be able to introduce you to families who now attend your school of interest.
