OFSTED provides an Early Years Inspection Framework that outlines what inspectors will be looking for during their visit. To ensure we cover all areas, we hold weekly staff meetings to discuss each section of the framework. As the manager, I also spend one-on-one time with each staff member, reviewing the necessary safeguarding policies and procedures so they feel confident answering questions on inspection day.

Mock Inspections

As an inspection approaches, the Local Authority offers a mock inspection service. This gives staff a chance to prepare and helps us identify any weaknesses. It’s an invaluable tool for ensuring we are ready for the real inspection.

Preparing for the Inspection

In the Early Years sector, the manager will receive a call at midday the day before the OFSTED inspection to inform on the focus areas. This includes first aid certificates, proof of right to work, qualifications, and essential policies such as Safeguarding and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) policies.

The Day of the Inspection

On the day of the OFSTED inspection, the inspector begins with a “Learning Walk” with the manager. This hour-long tour allows the nursery to showcase its operations and share as much information as possible. Following the Learning Walk, the inspector observes teachers interacting with the children, asking questions about their learning and development. They assess how well each practitioner knows their key children and their next developmental steps.

Leadership and Management Discussion

The inspector then meets with the manager for the “Leadership and Management” discussion. This session focuses on how the manager monitors staff and ensures all policies and procedures are in place.

Parent Feedback

The inspector also gathers feedback from parents. A comments form is provided to parents the day before the OFSTED inspection, and the inspector may speak with some parents in person or over the phone. This helps assess the strength of the nursery’s partnerships with parents and gather their opinions on the setting.

Final Feedback

After approximately six hours, the inspector conducts a feedback meeting with the manager and senior management team. They review each section, provide their evidence, and announce the outcome. The overall outcome remains confidential until it is moderated by an independent body, usually within 14 days. Once the report is published, the nursery can make the overall rating public.
